Chemical Toilet Design
Chemical toilets are
an alternative to flush toilets. Commonly referred to as
waterless toilets, low water closets and are ideal for
locations where there is no septic tank, the ground not
being suitable for one to be situated, or in conditions
where the water supply is limited or non existent, or
indeed where the is no access available to a sewer and
waste disposal system. There are several systems
available on the market. They are most sophisticated of
the portable toilets that are available and are also used
in congested cities like New York and
California.
When chemical
toilets are reviewed, the term now has been
excessively generalized; however there are several
different types of chemical toilets available. They all
differ in size and method of flush (i.e. the waste
disposal method) but invariably, the one thing a chemical
toilet of any design has in common is that the system is
generally waterless.
The toilet bowl tends to be a
slightly different design shape than flush toilets,
chemical toilets use a reservoir which holds the chemical
mix, and it is usually located directly below the toilet
seat. The chemicals reduce and mask the odors (although
not completely) and go some way to disinfecting the waste
as well as breaking it down. The storage capacity of
chemical toilets is limited, and need to be pumped out
regularly and cleaned by a specialist company. This
service type of contract can usually be agreed upon at
the point of sale.
More sophisticated designs are
those types of chemical toilets that have an electrically
powered recirculating pump, and these differ from simple
chemical toilets, in as much they separate the waste from
the chemical mix, and then re circulate the fluid through
the holding tank or the water tank that the toilet system
needs to store fresh water and process waste.
Research has constantly borne out
the fact that effluent from open latrines is, and has
been, responsible for the contamination of ground water
supplies throughout the world. Maintenance and operating
costs vary between sanitation and waste systems such as
bucket latrines and septic tanks etc, and chemical
toilets, regardless of the type and number of people
needed to be catered for, are an environmentally friendly
and economic alternative.
There are many countries that have
a constant water shortage, and to waste those scant
reserves on sewerage disposal is not an option without
huge investment in a sanitation and sewerage disposal and
water recovery infrastructure. Indeed, in many rural
areas of developed nations of the world, including the
USA, the cost of installing and maintaining a system such
as this is prohibitive.
The
alternative to flush toilets is now very cost effective,
environmentally friendly. The horror stories one may have heard
about chemical toilets is largely banished to the past, the
modern versions being clean and easy to use, and very cost
effective to maintain, and repaired regularly will give many
years of trouble free use.
