When you speak to fellow campers about their camping
experiences, it all seems to come down to talk about the
toilets. I mean the difference between a campsite with great
toilet facilities and a bad one will determine if you visit
that site again.
If you choose a campsite with well known good toilet facilities
then you may not see the need to bring your own toilet. But if
you are more inclined to exploring sites with no toilets then
you need to take one along with you. There are many ways this
can be done.
Elsan invented camping toilets way back when, before that your
options were a steel bucket with maybe a varnished wooden
toilet seat. Things have got a little more sophisticated now
though. Often ones on the market now have a tank to hold water
for flushing and any waste goes into a tank which you can
detach that will keep all the nasty stuff separate so you can
take to a chemical disposal point either at the campsite in
question or the local council provide this service in the town
you will be camping at.
They can come in various sizes and even shapes. You need a
balance as it needs to fit in your car along with all your
other camping gear, but it also needs to be comfortable and big
enough to accommodate your family requirements.
All portable toilets use a special fluid which uses enzymes to
digest the waste. This way it is better for the environment
than the old method of using formaldehyde to break the waste
down, this id work but is not very green. There are hundreds of
different camping toilet chemicals on the market and come in
all different colours. They also have fluids which deodorise to
give you a sweet smell every time you flush.
Whatever fluid you are using be sure to empty holding tank
often. If your purpose of the toilet is just for a quick pee in
the night for the kids then you don't even need any fluid, just
empty in the morning. This way you can use the main site toilet
during the day and avoid a long walk in the cold and dark when
you feel the urge in the middle of the night.
Personally I find the use of a camping toilet great for that
above purpose, know ones wants to be walking their little ones
to the toilet late at night and early morning.
