Going to the toilet (loo, john,
dunny, privy, boysroom, or what ever the toilet is
nicknamed where you come from), the seat can be made from
many materials. Anywhere from wood, plastic and in some
cases even metals are used and the end product does
indeed come in many guises. Any decently designed toilet
seat is ergonomically shaped to be comfortable when
taking the prone position, and improvements over the
years have morphed into the modern toilets seats that we
all take for granted today.
While you may have trouble choosing
the toilet seat you want to have your plumber install,
the one thing that you shouldn't really have to choose is
the color. Black toilet seats along with their
counterpart, the white toilet seat have vied for the
position of being the most used color in the early years.
However there are many colors, shades and patterns that
one can find toilet seats finished in, with the result
that black toilet seats are seen almost as rarely as
sightings of a blue moon.
In the early years of the modern
privy, back in the latter years of the nineteenth
century, the most commonly seen color of toilet seat
seen, especially in public washrooms was a black toilet
seat accompanied by a high tank toilet system. This was
later the most accepted system in many trains as
well.
However, since the arrival of the
modern and bright washroom, the dominant color has, since
probably the fifties, seen a swing from black to white,
reflecting a brighter area, and that fact that white
tends to be associated with cleanliness and hygiene
probably did help.
Indeed, the trend over the past
century has seen the black toilet seat relegated
to bit parts, overtaken by its more popular cousins that
come in white and an assortment of colors, patterns and
designs. As manufacturers over the last century have come
up with ever more styles moulded into a variety designs
and adorned with a number of colors, so has an ever more
thoughtful breed of innovative interior designer and
architect been able to cater more to the needs of an ever
increasingly sophisticated consumer.
This is true in many parts of the
world, and in certain jurisdictions in the USA, namely
Florida and Maryland legislature has even banned the use
of black toilet seats in all new washrooms and from being
used as replacements in washrooms that are in use as
they, apparently, mask unsanitary conditions, whatever is
meant by that. That is however, a moot point if
you’re
Certainly, in some places,
specifically the state of Pennsylvania in the America, a
black toilet seat in public restrooms is still the norm,
but a good guess is that you would be hard pressed to
find a black toilet seat in many modern homes, the trend
swaying towards, white, assorted colors, and then
patterned seats that pretty much defined the Seventies.
Some seats come with “high tech gadgetry” such as heated
seats covers, bidets and blow driers. However, do not
attempt to dry hair with a toilet seat that is equipped
with a blow dryer facility.

thing, whatever color a toilet seat maybe, it is very much a
