What Are ADA
Toilets ?
ADA complaint toilets (Americans with
Disabilities Act), are the result of years of campaigning
by disability groups. By law, in commercial premises, or
where the public interacts, special requirements for
disabled persons have to be in situ or
provided.
ADA
toilets,
commonly referred to as tall toilets generally comply
with prescribed guidelines, and are manufactured to be
about 4 inches taller than a regular toilet bowl. A
higher than normal toilet bowl makes for ease of access
and use by disabled persons whether confined to a
wheelchair or not. We may not all suffer disability, but
we all do have to use the
toilet.
With an ADA toilet, much, if not all, of
the painful symptoms, or difficulties associated with
using a toilet by a disabled individual are either
greatly relieved or banished altogether. No more sitting
on a regular low toilet position when having to visit the
toilet. For men and women, relief from pain or anxiety
for those private moments spent visiting the
bathroom.
Many
manufacturers make ADA toilets invariably from vitreous
china, and there are several brands available, but not
nearly as many regular models as one would assume there
to be. They can also be referred to as elevated toilets
or raised toilets.
Disabled persons that have to use a
wheelchair, either for all or most of the time, will find
these toilets particularly helpful, as they tend to be
about the same height as the sitting wheelchair position.
Those of you reading this that is in this situation will
empathize immediately.
If you have no difficulty in using the
toilet, and indeed have little or no contact with
disability or back pain, which cause extreme difficulty
and anxiety every time you have, perhaps it is difficult
to understand what a chore going to the toilet can
actually be.
ADA toilets work in the
same way as regular toilet bowl, are generally made in
the same manufacturing process, have a tank that holds
the water and flush mechanism, and a seat and lid combo.
Tall
toilets are equally as easy to clean and
maintain, as well as being totally practical for disabled
persons and persons with injuries.
Tall toilets by regulation should be
between 17 and 19 inches in height from the floor to the
rim of the toilet bowl, and is generally accepted that
this height is ideal for a disabled person’s facility.
ADA approved toilets come with separate tank or as a one
piece crafted item, are made from long lasting and easy
to clean vitreous china, and are available in a range of
colors depending on the supplier or the manufacturer of
the unit.
